Calitzdorp

CALITZDORP is a Karoo Village with a hosting heartbeat.

It is a place where you can stop and without hesitation enjoy the real charm of the town. This is truly a village worthy of more than a peek at 60km/h on the Route 62, so take the plunge and explore the village, it will surprise!

Calitzdorp is one of the main towns on Route 62, one enters Calitzdorp from the west of town through the imposing Huisrivier pass, from Oudtshoorn from the east or over the Rooiberg pass to the south west from van Wyksdorp.

Port capital, Fruit basket of the Klein Karoo, Home of 200 species of plants found nowhere else on earth, Calitzdorp falls within the wine route of the Klein Karoo, on the eastern border of the Western Cape. Calitzdorp is well known for its exceptional award winning year after year champion Port/wines by local wineries. We produce a range of distinct red blends, which can be similar to the wines of Portugal, or may resemble Brandy or Cognac. The very dry climate of the Klein Karoo does not suit most wines, but the Calitzdorp district has found a way to produce internationally recognised fortified wines. Tasting our famous wine and port at our several wineries is a must.

We have gorgeous Karoo architecture, Calitzdorp is full of historical buildings. Do yourself a favour, and walk through the village to appreciate some of these gems; sandstone-church a national monument – Many others can be seen on the outskirts of town at the foothills of Swartberg mountains in the Groenfontein valley and Kruisrivier circular route. From Kruisrivier venture to the Cango caves, or Prince Albert via the Swartberg pass.
